Right now, only some Oregon students are learning things like how to open a bank account, file taxes, build credit and even understand interest rates on a credit card. Some students who chose to take a personal finance course as an elective told lawmakers it was a helpful course when navigating life after graduation, and they want other students to have access to this as well. "When I entered college, I was astonished by the amount of peers who felt like they were behind in life. My hope is that all high school students, rather than just a select few, have the opportunity to learn essential life skills," said Melissa Ontiveros, a Tigard High School graduate.
